Table Name Halley’s Breslau Table
Table Description Halley’s Breslau Table. Minimum Age: 1 Maximum Age: 84
Comments Study Data: Tables of the Bills of Mortality at the City of Breslau, communicated to the Royal Society by Mr. Justell, wherein both the ages and sexes of all who die are monthly delivered, and compared with the number of the births, for five years last past, that is: 1687, 88, 89, 90, 91. Methodology: Under the assumption that the population of Breslau is a stationary population for many decades due to its geographical location and stable economic environment, Halley concluded that a table which displayed the number of people at each age must also display the chances of mortality at each age. The only thing wanting was the number of whole people. Halley simply took this value to be 1000. An analysis of the Breslau data then permitted Halley to construct the first Life Table which in turn gave rise to actuarial science. Data Transcription Errors: None. Data Certified: 04/2014
